Traditional "Presepe" (Nativity scene)

This is a Presepe that I made with my father this year. We always make one for Christmas. It took us more than a week, We used paper -maché , cork and a special kind of moss. The presepe is about 2m long but we can fold it in half and keep it for next year.

There are lots of different traditional characters and interesting things in it....see if you can find some of them.....

a pottery wheel and a potter
a ricotta cheese maker
a flour mill
a water wheel
Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus
a pizza maker
a fish monger
a barrel maker
a carpenter
a tavern
a fisherman
a washer woman
a butcher
                                        I hope you like it!

Note: St Francis of Assisi first started "Nativity Scenes", he used live animals. Now it is a tradtion that every family has a Nativity Scene in their house at Christmas time. We usually start making ours around the 8th December but we only put Baby Jesus in the manger on Christmas Eve. We use figures made of terracotta and my father uses special motors to make things move. It's a lot of fun!

  1. Wow how creative. It looks really pretty. My grandmother always puts out a nativity scene. She has had it for many years. Its made of wood and is very delicate.

For Christmas I make Gammon for lunch it is pork which is glazed in honey and covered in pineapple. It is delicious!
Your looks much nicer than what I make.
Why does it take so long and what do you have to do?

  3. Wow! That is very impressive for Christmas my family and I make a delicious fruit cake which contains: cherries, pineapple, apple, brandy (but not a lot) and sometimes peaches. On Christmas we also put up the Christmas tree and decorate it together which is really fun for my family and I!

  4. Oh wow that must have been a lot of hard work but it was definetlly worth it. I also have a nativity for Christmas except we use the same one every year. My Dads mom (my grandma) knitted all the people and put them around cardboard stands, and my moms dad (my grandpa) made a stable. We also have a giant fake tree that we put up every year where we hang up all different kinds of ornaments from different cities and countries, our things we made when we were younger and all other kinds. My family used to eat turkey but now we usually have a selection of meats. Every first year my moms side come, so my uncle and aunt and my two cousins and my grandma and grandpa, and the second year both my grandparents come.

  6. In my household, my family and I always put up put up the Christmas tree and we decorate it together. We also set up little nativity scenes with Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus and lots of wooden animals. We often cook turkey and other delicious meats. We have a big family lunch and we set up a big table outside. I love spending Christmas with my family and close family friends.

  7. That is such a beautiful presepe,it is amazing that you make and use so many different figures for your nativity set. You must have so much fun making that with your dad! Do you make one every year, or do you just make one and then keep it for a while before it gets to old? At Christmas time, my family and I put up many different Christmas ornaments and snow globes around our house. I also love to decorate our Christmas tree, with lots of different ornaments, tinsel and colourful bobbles.

  8. Wow that is so beautiful, you and your Father must be very talented to make such a beautiful presepe. We normally go to London, and pick a small tree from a nearby forest , then we get a bucket a fill it with moist sand and stick the silver spray painted tree into the bucket then we hang our special ornaments on the tree.
